This $5 Breakfast from Costco in California Sounds Amazing — Grocery News

2017 was a big year, and I personally spent a large part of it in a state of overwhelming envy over the array of fancy and delicious-looking dishes that other people could find in their Costco food courts. A Costco in Wales served cottage pie — which is like shepherd’s pie, but with beef — and jacket potatoes, while Costco in France serves chicken fingers and ham and cheese croissants. But now a California Costco is stepping up for U.S. Costco stores everywhere with a new açaí bowl that looks pretty amazing, and it’s just $4.99.

The 5 Best Places to Buy Kitchenware in Paris — Travel Intelligence

From a pragmatic standpoint, it makes zero sense to purchase kitchen equipment in Europe if you live in the United States. If you’re buying more than a few linens, it’s either heavy to haul or expensive to check in the belly of an airplane. I know from experience that people stare at you if you walk through security with a fine mesh strainer. Depending on the exchange rate, it can be expensive. And, well, don’t you already have silverware?

How To Make Chicken and Rice Soup — Cooking Lessons from The Kitchn

Canned chicken noodle soup was the meal my mom warmed up for us on sick days while she balanced getting us well (read: back to school) with getting work done at home. Chicken and rice soup, however, was made from scratch and an all-day affair we savored.

Chicken and rice soup is just the sort of thrifty luxury we should all master in the kitchen. A whole chicken is simmered to both make the rich broth and for the tender chicken it yields. The rest of the soup is built on the bits and bobs you probably have in the kitchen right now: a few banged-up carrots, some limp celery, a partial bag of rice. The resulting soup is nourishing, full of chicken, tender vegetables, and rice that creates a creamy thickness without any cream.

My mom knew what she was doing: Save the chicken noodle soup for sick days and make this chicken and rice soup whenever you need to taste home in a bowl.

Recipe: Mexican Restaurant-Style Cauliflower Rice — Quick and Easy Weeknight Sides

Inspired by the savory, tomato-tinged rice you know and love from your favorite Mexican restaurant, this version brings all of that plus an extra dose of veggies to the dinner table. Like any cauliflower rice recipe, you’re certainly not going to mistake tender cauliflower for toothsome grains of rice, but that’s not the point. It’s a veggie-heavy alternative infused with a warm, subtle heat and a hint of tomatoey sweetness, and balanced with a squeeze of tangy lime juice.

How To Cook Eggs in an Electric Pressure Cooker — Cooking Lessons from The Kitchn

The pressure cooker is an old-fashioned appliance that is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and there are many good reasons why. Chief among them is the fact that it just cooks so many foods so well; if you have a pressure cooker, you know what I mean. You probably had a gateway experience that made you say Oh! This is what this thing can do.

For me, that gateway cooking experience was simple and elemental: soft- and hard-boiled eggs. The pressure cooker makes them better than any other method I know. Here’s how!

Sara Moulton on Sexual Harassment in the Food Industry’s “Boys’ Club” — Food News

In recent months, many industries have been rocked by stories of sexual harassment, misconduct, and worse. The stories may be more public now, but the events they describe are not new. In many cases, harassment and overt sexism have been pervasive problems that have been dismissed, ignored, swept under the rug, or held as a sort of family secret for decades or longer. The food industry is far from being alone in this, but it is a high-profile example of an industry where sexual harassment has been treated as a normal thing for far too long.

Recipe: Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili — Quick and Easy Weeknight Dinners

Despite what some Texans believe, the best chili is one where beans take center stage and vegetables get some of the spotlight. So for this number, pinto and kidney beans kick things off by spending the day simmering in a warmly spiced tomato broth. By the time you lift the lid after a long day, you will find the beans tender and the liquid thickened. Half a poblano pepper and a dash of chili powder lend a mild heat, but the secret to making this chili sing is the last-minute addition of sweet corn kernels and a splash of apple cider vinegar.

The heat of this vegetarian chili quickly thaws frozen corn kernels, preserving the pop of fresh, sweet flavor. The zing of apple cider vinegar wakes up the earthy, umami-rich flavors that mellow during cooking. Chili is a thick, hearty one-pot meal best cooked low and slow, so put away the Dutch oven and plug in the slow cooker for this one.

What’s the Weirdest Thing You Used to Eat as a Kid? — Personal Questions

Right now Kitchn is testing out a recipe for pizza bagel bites (spoiler!) and that got some of my coworkers talking about the foods we ate as kids. The conversation started out about the best way to heat up bagel bites — were you a broiler or microwave family? — but it quickly turned into us discussing all the secretly weird things we liked to eat as kids. And I’m not talking about a deep, dark obsession with Lunchables or Dunkaroos — no, these strange concoctions go beyond the prepared snacks of the ’90s.

I’ll start with mine first: Because I’m from the Midwest, my favorite snack obviously involved melted cheese. When my parents weren’t looking and I had the TV to myself, I used to melt a bunch of shredded Kraft cheese on a plate in the microwave and then add a few splashes of white wine vinegar (so fancy!) and just, um, eat it with a fork.

The #1 Wellness Trend for 2018, According to CAP Beauty — Wellness Trends

Five years ago if you had asked me what a “wellness trend” was, I might have said something about some silly fad diet or asked you to google “Gwyneth Paltrow” and see what she’s saying on the topic. A lot has changed in the industry, and in my personal life, since then (although, yes, Paltrow is here to stay). Just last year we saw a huge increase on the topic of self-care and how that — shock — might look different for everyone. So now wellness trends, at least for me, actually mean something exciting. It means an opportunity to experiment with how I take care of myself.

When looking forward to 2018 and the booming wellness space, I knew I wanted to talk to Cindy DiPrima Morisse, one of the co-founders of CAP Beauty, a New York-based store and blog that sells amazing, gorgeously packaged products that all promote the idea that “beauty is wellness.” Here’s what she had to say about what’s trending in 2018 in the wellness space.

You’ll Have to Pry Pillsbury Crescent Rolls from My Cold, Dead Hands — Kitchn Obsessions

While you were popping Champagne corks on New Year’s Eve, I was popping cans — cans of Pillsbury Crescents, that is.

There are few sounds so aurally satisfying as hearing that gentle explosion when the cardboard canister is cracked against the edge of a countertop, seams bursting to expose khaki-colored dough. And for me, there’s no better time to enjoy a crescent roll than on New Year’s Eve.
